what is SSL?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a widely used protocol for securing data transmission over the internet. It is a cryptographic protocol that provides a secure connection between a web server and a web browser or other client applications. SSL is often used to secure online transactions, such as credit card payments and online banking, as well as to protect the transmission of sensitive data.
SSL is now commonly known as Transport Layer Security (TLS), but the two terms are often used interchangeably. The SSL/TLS protocol works by creating a secure channel between the client and the server by using public key encryption to exchange keys for symmetric encryption. This ensures that data transmitted over the channel is secure and cannot be intercepted or tampered with by any third party.
SSL provides the following benefits:
- Encryption: SSL encrypts all data transmitted between the client and the server. This ensures that even if the data is intercepted, it cannot be read by anyone except the intended recipient.
- Authentication: SSL provides authentication by verifying the identity of the web server with which the client is communicating. This prevents phishing attacks where an attacker tries to impersonate a legitimate website to steal sensitive information.
- Trust: SSL certificates are issued by trusted third-party Certificate Authorities (CA), which verify the identity of the website owner and issue a certificate that is used to establish the SSL connection. This creates a level of trust between the website and the user, as the user can be confident that they are communicating with a legitimate website.
To enable SSL on a website, the website owner must obtain an SSL certificate from a trusted CA and install it on their web server. This process can be complex, but many web hosting providers offer SSL certificates
